Overview

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine was established on August 11, 2011. With the goal of realizing the translational regenerative medicine to treat the incurable major diseases, the key lab sets to address the fundamental scientific questions in regenerative biology, and to clear technology bottlenecks to promote innovation in regenerative medicine by cooperative and internationized teamwork. Our vision is to build a world-class research center focusing on stem cell and regenerative medicine, which integrating basic research, technology innovation, industry standard forming and talent training.

The key lab has established a high-level research team in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine, with a rational knowledge structure, high educational qualifications, wide professional coverage, and strong technical capabilities. The team consists of 20 Principle Investigators and 30 Associate Investigators.

Prof. Pan Guangjin is the Director of the key lab, and is also the project leader of the national key research and development program, the Chief Scientist of the 973 Program, an awardee in the CAS Hundred Talents Program (Outstanding), an outstanding talent of Guangdong Province's Special Support Plan. Prof. Chen Jiekai is the deputy Director, and is also the Winners of National Distinguished Youth Foundation.

Research

The key lab puts emphasis on both basic research which focusing on the cell fate determination and regulation mechanisms, and applied basic research for cell therapy and other precision medicine, and initiates clinical research of cell therapy by external cooperation.

The new development strategy of the key lab will closely align with the objectives outlined in the national “Fourteenth Five-Year Plan”, specifically in promoting advancements in stem cell therapy, gene diagnosis and treatment, and immune cell therapy.

Resources

Over the past 10 years, the key lab has made significant progress in laboratory infrastructure, funding, and personnel development, setting a solid foundation for future endeavors. The key lab has actively participated in building the "Therapeutic Cell Research Preparation Center" that meets GMP standards in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, respectively.

In 2017, GIBH’s cell preparation center, which was independently designed and constructed in accordance with EU and US GMP standards, was the first to be approved by the Guangdong Provincial Institute for Drug Control. It can prepare stem cells for 24 patients at the same time, providing a standardized source of cells for subsequent preclinical research and clinical application of stem cell products. This has improved the standardization level of clinical-grade stem cell preparation and promoted the clinical translation and application of stem cells in our country to reach the world's advanced level. It is led by Prof. Pan Guangjin, the Director of the key lab.

The key Lab has been actively involved in the organization of the ‘Guangzhou International Conference on Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine’, and plays an important role in construction of the Max Planck – GIBH Joint Center for Regenerative Biomedicine (MGCRB), the first Max Planck Center in China.
