Dr. Yanshan Fang from the University of Pennsylvania visits GIBH

Date:Mar 20, 2012

On March 12th Dr. Yanshan Fang from the university of Pennsylvania, Howard Hughes Medical Institute attended an academic seminar held at GIBH and made a presentation entitled “Axon Degeneration: Insights from a Novel In Vivo Model of Neural Injury”.  Dr. Guangjin Pan from South China Institute of Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine, GIBH hosted the seminar.

During the seminar, Dr. Fang highlighted a novel nerve damage model designed and built based on the wings of fruit flies.  Using this model, axon degeneration caused by Neurotrosis can be directly monitored and studied on living fruit flies in real time, which is a great breakthrough in the field of chronic neurodegenerative diseases. The attendees were inspired by Dr. Fang’s presentation and exchanged views and had in-depth discussion with Dr. Fang.

This visit not only strengthened the academic exchange between University of Pennsylvania and GIBH, but provided scientists at South China Institute of Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine, an innovative perspective in conducting the research in neurotrosis.
