GIBH New Campus Cornerstone Laying Ceremony takes place at Guangzhou Science City

The groundbreaking and cornerstone-laying ceremony of the GIBH new campus took place on January 25, 2008, just before the Chinese Spring Festival.

 

It was an important event for the Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Among the celebrities participating the ceremony were the vice-president Jiayang LI of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice Mayor Zhibiao XU of Guangzhou, Prof. Nanshan ZHONG, Academician of CAS, Deputy Director-General Xianmin MA of the Science and Technology Department of Guangdong Province, Director-General Le KANG of the CAS Bureau of Life Science and Biotechnology. The event began at 11:30 am. Three leaders’ speeches were followed by laying the cornerstone and a gun salute, before a crowd of more than 300 attendees. The ceremony continued for about an hour.

 

The GIBH new campus which is near the current temporary facility is also located at the Guangzhou Science City. The new campus covers an area of 97 mu, with a complex of comprehensive buildings, chemistry buildings, biology buildings, animal buildings, etc. The first phase of the project is to be completed at the end of 2009. The new facility will greatly support the research in biomedicine and advance drug discovery at GIBH in future.
