An Academic and Technology Exchange between GIBH and SIMM

Date:Dec 30, 2006
Facing the continue threat of influenza and potential threat of bird flu pandemics, Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health (GIBH), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, established a team of research scientists whom recently made significant progress to tackle these potential major disease outbreaks.

In order to quickly solve the problems from pilot to industrial scale synthesis of anti-flu medicines, on Nov 18, 2005, Director General Ling Chen and Director of Synthetic and Natural Products Jiancun Zhang paid a visit to Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM) which is also conducting research and development on anti-flu medicines. Director Jian Ding, Deputy Director Jingkang Shen and senior investigators of SIMM discussed their experiences on synthesizing new and existing anti-flu medicines. GIBH and SIMM reached agreements on exchanging medicinal chemistry expertise, establishing optimization procedures, stabilizing raw material supply and furnishing collaborations with local pharmaceutical manufacturers. GIBH and SIMM will jointly and coordinately conduct pilot and medium scale synthesis of anti-flu medicines to path ways for industrialized scale synthesis of anti-flu medicines for strategic reserve, reflecting the commitment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to fully integrate the resources of its institutes to help the nation face these imminent threats.
