Mobile Biocontaminant Laboratory (BSL3)

The mobile Level 3 biosafety laboratory established by the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health serves as a newly established public support platform. Its primary objective is to provide a safety barrier and support for fundamental research on emerging infectious diseases, the development of detection and diagnostic technologies and products, as well as drug and vaccine research and development. The laboratory's key responsibilities include:

1) Epidemic Response: In response to outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases, the laboratory will deploy personnel to affected areas for sample collection, pathogen isolation and identification, and clinical sample testing, as required for effective epidemic prevention and control.

2) Development of Diagnostic Products: The laboratory will conduct pathogen culture and purification to supply essential raw materials for the development of diagnostic reagents. Additionally, it will be responsible for the functional verification of these diagnostic products, offering recommendations for further optimization.

3) Drug and Antibody Screening: The laboratory will facilitate the establishment of high-throughput screening systems to identify lead compounds, screen existing drugs for activity, and evaluate the inhibitory effects of monoclonal antibodies, immune cells, and genetically engineered products.

4) Vaccine Effect Assessment: The laboratory will assist in the detection of antibody responses, T cell responses, and related immunological studies to provide guidance for evaluating vaccine effectiveness and further optimization.

5) Study of Pathogen Pathogenic Mechanisms: The laboratory will engage in research focused on pathogen-host cell interactions, examining key factors and mechanisms involved in pathogen invasion, replication, proliferation, and evasion of host immunity, with the aim of discovering new therapeutic targets.

Currently, the laboratory has largely completed the establishment of its hardware facilities and is in the process of developing a management system, along with applying for necessary certifications and accreditations.
