The 7th Guangzhou International Conference on Stem Cells Convenes in the Baiyun International Convention Center

Posted: Jan 27, 2015

The 7th Guangzhou International Conference on Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine and The 3rd Annual conference of Chinese Society For Regenerative Cell biology was organized by GIBH on December 18th-19th, 2014. The conference aimed to explore the frontiers of stem cells and regenerative biology to accelerate stem cell research in our country. This year's discussions were focused on iPS cells, development & differentiation, neurogenesis & CNS disorders, hematopoietic regeneration, skeletal muscle stem cell and muscle regeneration, and new approaches in stem cell biology.

The 2014 annual conference gathered over 300 well-known scholars, including expert panel members of the National Key Project on stem cells/reproduction and development, executive members of the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on stem cells and regenerative medicine) and other professionals of these areaa from all over the world.

China has made remarkable progress in stem cell biology research

Academician Prof. Gang Pei delivered a speech. He started by first outlining the development of the Chinese Society for Regenerative Cell Biology with many statistic data illustrating the tremendous progress made in this field. Then, he mentioned that there are promising commercial prospects for stem cell technology in China and that many technology transfer contracts have been signed in Zhejiang, Tianjin, Qingdao, and other provinces in China. However, he stressed that stem cell breakthroughs need to have repeated validations in large animal models before they can be applied in humans. Finally, he acknowledged GIBH’s achievement and influence in this area.

Timothy HuntExcite yourselves doing research

Prof. Timothy Hunt’s discovery of cyclins led him to share the Noble Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2001 with Lee Hartwell and Paul Nurse. Prof. Hunt warmly greeted his audience on the podium and encouraged young Chinese researchers to break daily routines and excite themselves doing research by invoking his wife’s word saying that if you can win Nobel Prize, anybody can. During his speech, he also introduced the discovery of the mechanism of cell regulation and his contribution to it. He also prompted scientists who are studying cancer to focus on the cell cycle as a way to cure the disease.

Building a well-known brand of international stem cell conferences

This conference was hosted by the Chinese Society for Regenerative Cell Biology, the Organizing Committee of the Guangzhou Convention of Overseas Chinese Scholars in Science and Technology, the Guangzhou Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and others. and organized by the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health (GIBH). The conference has been held every mid-December since 2008 and aims at advancing international academic exchanges and promoting the domestic and international influence of Chinese research on stem cells and regenerative medicine.
