The Guangdong Key Laboratory of Biomedical Computing was established in March 2016 with the approval of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology. Relying on the Chinese Academy of Sciences Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, the laboratory integrates the scientific research strength of biology, pharmacy, computer and other disciplines, forming a biomedical computing innovation research platform.
The laboratory is committed to establishing key molecular target proteins for pathology based on supercomputing, combined with clinical data, cell and animal disease models; Determine its spatial structure, design small molecule compounds, and establish a library of related compounds; Guided by stem cell technology, obtain cell models of diseases for high-throughput screening, and use cross fusion between biological models and chemical synthesis to develop new drugs for treating diseases.
Simultaneously building a biopharmaceutical cloud computing and big data research base, as well as an innovative talent training base, striving to make breakthrough progress in innovative drug and health research and application, and serving the economic construction and social development of Guangdong Province.
The laboratory has a high-level academic team with a reasonable knowledge structure, high educational level, wide professional coverage, and strong technical strength. There are 11 PIs, a team of 70 people, and 31 PhD holders, including 12 returned researchers and 5 associate researchers, covering multiple disciplines such as molecular biology, structural biology, computational biology, computer science, medicinal chemistry, and stem cell and regenerative medicine.
The laboratory has three research directions: drug target discovery and confirmation, protein structure analysis and small molecule design, and cell model establishment and drug screening. At present, there are 2 recipients of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 Southern Guangdong Top 100 Scholar, 6 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Talent Program, 1 expert member of the National "Major New Drug Creation" Science and Technology Major Special Project, 1 editorial board member of Bentham Science Publisher's microRNA journal in China, 1 advisory editorial board member of ACS Med. Chem. Lett, 1 advisory editorial board member of J. Med. Chem., and 1 high-level overseas innovation and entrepreneurship leading talent in Guangzhou.
The laboratory has a biological big data supercomputing platform of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Supercomputing Guangzhou Branch and a regional center for large-scale instruments of life sciences in Guangzhou. The laboratory will conduct solid research, be brave in innovation, and strive to become a first-class domestic and internationally influential biomedical computing laboratory.
