Ones to Watch
Manish Kumar

"2023 was my golden year!" Manish Kumar concluded without hesitation when looking back on the year that had just passed.

In that year, he completed his Ph.D. at the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (referred to as "Guangzhou Health Institute") and stayed on as a postdoctoral scholar to continue his beloved research work.

"I really like the research environment here, and the equipment is also very new and advanced, so I chose to stay," he said.

"I love my research work in Guangzhou."

Manish first came to China in 2016 as a foreign visiting researcher at the Primate Research Center of the Kunming Institute of Zoology, engaged in research related to mouse embryo development experiments in vitro.

"Although the research time was only two months, it paved the way for my next visit to China," Manish said. In his view, this was also an important turning point in his life, which led to the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. at the Guangzhou Health Institute in 2017.

To better conduct research work in China, Manish also deliberately studied Chinese in Beijing and some courses, while declining invitations from the United States and Germany. In his eyes, China also has advanced scientific research equipment, and the research environment is very friendly to researchers.

During the epidemic, many foreign high-end talents in Guangzhou chose to return to their hometowns, and Manish was no exception, but he quickly returned to Guangzhou. "I love my research, I must complete my Ph.D., and I don't want to lose the hard-won opportunity, so I'm back!"

The clouds eventually clear, and the moon shines through. The year 2023 was the first year after the epidemic opened up and was also the "golden year" in Manish's words. In that year, he obtained his Ph.D., completed some key research, received a postdoctoral research scholarship, became the leader of two research groups, and started a new stage in life.

Facing 2024, Manish said that he will carry out research work in Guangzhou for a long time in the future and hopes to grow into an excellent researcher.

"E People" have a colorful spare time life.

Everything in Manish's kitchen is spotless, and there are all kinds of grains... Walking into Manish's kitchen, everything is orderly.

"I like cooking very much and can cook dishes from many countries." Apart from work, Manish is also a person who loves life very much. He invites colleagues to dinner at home every week and is known as a super "E person" among his colleagues.

Manish has lived in Guangzhou for six years and has fallen in love with Chinese cuisine. "When I first came, I didn't know the taste of many foods, so I was afraid to try them, but now I can try many foods. I will go out with friends on weekends to find good restaurants."

In addition to delicious food, Manish is also deeply attracted by Chinese Kung Fu. Before coming to China, he had watched many movies of "Kung Fu Superstar" Bruce Lee. "The moves are very cool and handsome!" At Bruce Lee's ancestral home in Yongqing Fang, Guangzhou, Manish watched the film and was full of emotion.

To better integrate into life in Guangzhou, Manish also gave himself a Chinese name "Ma Minghua", experienced "script killing", visited Zhujiang New Town, Yongqing Fang, and felt the culture and development speed of Guangzhou.

In his view, Guangzhou is an international city where many people can speak fluent English and are very friendly to foreigners. "I have many friends here, and the working and living environment is very comfortable."
