Research Areas

Metabolism and cell fate: how metabolism regulates stem cell self-renewal and pluripotency, and whether these mechanisms play similar important roles in vivo and during stem cell aging.

Academic Performance

He has published >20 papers in journals such as Cell Stem Cell, Nature Cell Biology, Cell Research and Journal of Biological Chemistry. Got 3 patents. 2016, Leading scientist of National Key Research Plan-Stem Cell and Translational Research Program; 2013, “National Natural and Science Awards” second prize; 2016, Guangdong Special Talent Supporting Program; 2017, Outstanding Awards of CAS-major participant; 2010-2011, Excellent PhD thesis, Excellent Dean Awards, Excellent Graduate of CAS.

Major scientific contributions:

1. discovered first vitamin C (Vc) enhances greatly somatic cell reprogramming and opened a new direction to understand the biological roles of Vc (Cell Stem Cell, cover story, 2010, >800 citations); further characterized the roles of autophagy and mTORC1 in regulating mitochondrial and cellular remodeling in early stage of somatic cell reprogramming (Nature Cell Biology, 2015).

2. reported first the unique DNA mutation pattern of Chinese non-small cell cancer patients which provided important clues for targeted chemical therapy development (Cell Research, 2005).
