Stem Cell Research Centre Launched in Hong Kong by Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health

  

On December 16 2016, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation ("HKSTP") and Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health ("GIBH") co-hosted the second Hong Kong and Guangzhou International Conference on Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine in Hong Kong. President of Chinese Academy of Sciences (“CAS”), Prof. Bai Chunli and HKSAR Chief Executive The Hon CY Leung attended the ceremony and announced the setting up of the Guangzhou Hong Kong Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research Centre at Hong Kong Science Park.

 

Prof. Bai Chunli expressed his gratitude for the long term support provided by Hong Kong Government for CAS’s scientific and technological collaborations in Hong Kong. He pointed out that CAS has always put a high value on its scientific and technological cooperation with Hong Kong, and that CAS firmly believes in the great significance of such close mutual collaborations in promoting the development of both sides. “Hong Kong possesses the best environment for conducting scientific researches. GIBH’s launch of its research centre in Hong Kong marks a substantial step of progress in this field of scientific research and development”, says Prof. Bai. He also pointed out that the establishment of the centre will further demonstrate the strengths of CAS, will have positive effects in response to the implementation of the “One Belt One Road” policy of our country, and will also be an important forward base of CAS for international cooperation.

 

CY Leung mentioned that Hong Kong plays the role of a “super contact”, an ideal platform where scientists from Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas can work together. He meanwhile encouraged superior institutes in field of stem cell research, such as GIBH, to develop relevant researches and industrialization in Hong Kong.

 

Prof. Bai Chunli conferred the plate of Guangzhou Hong Kong Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research Centre to the President of GIBH, Prof. Pei Duanqing. Prof. Pei Duanqing opinionated that GIBH will set as its mission the interconnection of Eastern and Western cultures and sciences, and will endeavor to transform the new Hong Kong centre into a basis for innovative ideas, a platform for developing new technologies, and a magnet attracting young scientists.
