Overview

The GIBH-HKU Guangdong-Hong Kong Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research Centre (the GIBH-HKU Joint Centre) was officially inaugurated at HKU on August 18, 2011. The former Prime Minister Li Keqiang and the former Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang unveiled the center at the 100th anniversary celebration of The University of Hong Kong. Its establishment represents a significant collaboration between GIBH and HKU, serving as an important initiative to implement the “Framework Agreement on Hong Kong- Guangdong Cooperation”.

Based on the disciplinary advantages and complementarity of both parties, the two parties have determined since their establishment that they will focus on stem cells and regenerative medicine by using stem cells to obtain functional/therapeutic cells, tissues, and organs for disease modeling and cell therapy. Stem cells and regenerative medicine have become a new generation of medical revolution after drug treatment and surgical treatment, which will pave the way for innovations in the basic science of cell biology, genetics and medicine, and for huge change in social and economic areas as well.

Prof. Chen Jiekai is currently the Co-Director of the GIBH-HKU Joint Centre from GIBH side, and is also the Director of the Cell Lineage and Development Research Center, Executive Deputy Director of the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine. He has several National and CAS talent title or academic positions, including the recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

Other GIBH team faculty members include Prof. Peng Guangdun, Prof. Li Peng, and Prof. Lai Liangxue, Prof. Cai Chenleng, Prof. Pan Guangjin, and Prof Wu Donghai.

Prof. Tse Hung-Fat is the Co-Director of the GIBH-HKU Joint Centre from HKU side, and is also the Chairperson of the Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, Li Ka-Shing Faculty of Medicine, HKU, the Chief of the Cardiology Division, Honorary Consultant and Chief of Service of the Department of Medicine at Queen Mary Hospital.

The HKU team mainly comes from the cardiovascular professional team of Queen Mary Hospital. Among them are Prof. YIU Kai-Hang, and Prof. SIU Chung-Wah, who are both well-known cardiologists with rich clinical experience.

Other team faculty members include Prof. Liu Pengtao, Prof. Xu Aimin and Prof. Ralf Jauch. Prof. Liu Pengtao is the Director of Centre for Translational Stem Cell Biology.

Research

Research layout includes:

1) disease modeling and innovative treatments based on iPSC platform with a focus on heart and liver diseases;
2) cancer immune cell therapy;
3) Application of iPSC-MSCs and exosomes in genetic cardiomyopathy and heart failure.

Resources

The GIBH-HKU Joint Centre has actively participated in building the "Therapeutic Cell Research Preparation Center" that meets GMP standards in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, respectively.

In 2017, GIBH’s cell preparation center, which was independently designed and constructed in accordance with EU and US GMP standards, was the first to be approved by the Guangdong Provincial Institute for Drug Control. It can prepare stem cells for 24 patients at the same time, providing a standardized source of cells for subsequent preclinical research and clinical application of stem cell products. This has improved the standardization level of clinical-grade stem cell preparation and promoted the clinical translation and application of stem cells in our country to reach the world's advanced level. It is led by Prof. Pan Guangjin, the former Co-Director of the GIBH-HKU Joint Centre on GIBH side.

In May 2023, after years of hard work, the GMP Cell Therapy Laboratory of the University of Hong Kong will also be officially put into use. The laboratory is a top scientific research facility of the Faculty of Medicine of HKU, thereby protecting Hong Kong’s local public health and promoting the development of “advanced therapeutic products”. The laboratory is committed to developing innovative research and manufacturing advanced therapeutic products, providing stem cell therapy for patients with cardiovascular diseases and CAR-T cell therapy for blood cancer patients. It is led by Prof. Tse Hung-Fat, the Co-Director of the GIBH-HKU Joint Centre on HKU side.

History

The GIBH-HKU Joint Centre was officially inaugurated at HKU on August 18, 2011 and was listed as CAS-Hong Kong SAR joint laboratories in 2012. The former Prime Minister Li Keqiang and the former Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang unveiled the center at the 100th anniversary celebration of The University of Hong Kong. In 2017, The GIBH-HKU Joint Centre passed CAS official assessments with a “Good” Score.
